My name is Seena Farhadi and I am a student at UC Berkeley, studying Economics, Business, and Public Policy. I am the founder of the Learning, Enrichment, and Assistance Program, better known as LEAP. I have always been passionate about educational equity, and during my junior year, I became aware of Homeless Outreach Program for Education (HOPE), which provides resources to homeless students in Mount Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD). I became so inspired by their work and knew I had to support the organizations somehow. As a first-generation American, I have seen how many systemic obstacles lead immigrants and refugees to homelessness and unstable financial conditions. I began to think about the many services offered to me by my high school, like tutoring, and recognized that the majority of the 700+ students in HOPE lacked access to after-school academic support. So, I began to reach out to students across MDUSD in hopes of finding volunteer high school tutors, and the interest was overwhelming—within a few days nearly 40 students from across the district expressed their desire to work with HOPE’s students. It quickly became clear to me that this program would create a community and bonds like no other!
